Victoria Hislop: THE LAST DANCE AND OTHER STORIES

THE LAST DANCE AND OTHER STORIES  is a collection of ten stories written by Victoria Hislop. Hislop is famous for her writing being inspired by Greece and the Greek culture. And this book is no exception.

It is a light-hearted, funny, smart, entertaining collection. Perfect summer reading if you don't want to be stuck with a book you might not finish. If you are bored of one story, you just turn couple of pages and you can start on another one. Everyone can find something what they will like.

THE PRIEST AND THE PARROT
THE KAFENION
AFLAME IN ATHENS
THE ZACHAROPLASTENION
THE PERIPTERO
ONE CRETAN EVENING
THE BUTCHER OF KARAPOLI
THE LESSON
THE PINE TREE
THE LAST DANCE

Each story is accompanied by a wonderful illustration which sets the mood.

Co-incidentally I have taken my copy with me on my holiday on sunny greek island Corfu, which helped me even more to imagine the setting of each individual story. Ms Hislop does a great job with capturing the heart of greek culture. Each story is wonderfully set in different areas of Greece and each of them is beautifully described. You get to know the greek traditions and customs with a sensitivity that reveals knowledge of not just the place but also the human condition.

You will laugh. You will cry. Basically typical summer reading. A little bit melancholic and romantic, but also very true to the core.

My favourite story is THE LAST DANCE. It's a story of true love and what happens if it just doesn't work out. The feelings are still there but we are forced to move on. Wonderful. Inspiring. Heart-breaking.

I would recommend this book as light summer reading. It's also great for people with short attention spam as it's a collection of short story, not WAR AND PIECE.

HAPPY READING LOVELIES xXx
